Sensory based activity boxes for care homes and carers.
Activity Box
£40.00 + postage (uk only)These activity boxes are an amazing way for you to connect in a different way with your loved one, bringing you closer through a shared experience.
If you are a family member caring for a loved one with dementia, a care home manager, activity lead, wellbeing team, or you work with elderly adults in the community.
Then this is the perfect activity box for you. A sensory, reusable, 1-1 activity, you need to have for that quiet moment of calm.
The creation of this gentle journey box came from my conversations with the residents I work with, their carers and loved ones.
What became clear is that people are finding it more and more difficult to connect to one and other in such a fast paced world.
We are told about so many different ways we can communicate nowadays - but many of these ways seem to have forgotten that the most beautiful moments of connection are simply the ones shared when we are together.
Whether that is communicating with your nan who has dementia, a client who is non verbal or a new resident with trust issues. Any role where you are trying to connect with a vulnerable elderly adult can be hard if you don’t know the right path, but this box helps open up those lines of communication to make it easier, to share that moment, and to connect.
Designed so memories and precious moments are shared through these easy to follow cards and sensory aids.
Made to be reusable; eco-friendly and sensory, this box was made to last.
Perfect as a 1-1 activity with less mobile loved ones.
Sensory & inclusive; using my different experiences to tell the story (hearing), different colours, fabric and shapes (touch and sight), using the lavender oil, flowers and products that all smell slightly different (scent).
Filled with independent choice; the ability to choose what they like for themselves has been the most loved part of these boxes. There is a choice of 3 colours/patterns in each of the 3 products; soother, heart and organza bag. There is also a cotton pad each with a different colour around the edge, again, allowing for the option of choosing the one they resonate with the most. Making it a lovely way to learn more about that person, their personality and story.
This box has everything you need inside and it is simple to follow with zero set up involved.
It removes the stress away from planning, with the added benefit that it can bring you closer to your loved one or resident.
Although I am based in the South West, these boxes can be posted all across the UK.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
This box was created for families, carers, activity leads in care homes and day care centres and carers who do home visits.
This box is perfect to be used with all vulnerable adults, uniquely beneficial for those living with dementia, autism or non verbal, opening up different lines of communication.
-
This box is designed to be used straight away, although I would advise reading the ‘Steps for your Gentle Journey’ sheet first. This explains how to use the box for the best benefit.
-
Uniquely made to trigger reactions in all individuals through sensory experiences, the more you repeat this, the clearer the benefits will become.
Each individual will be able to experience at least one sense, even if one or two are lessened meaning this is an inclusive activity for all.
Ideal for a 1-1 to really allow that gentle journey together. The boxes cover touch, scent, sight and hearing, allowing a familiarity to build.
Scent: Dried lavender is a calming scent throughout the box and in the products, used as a bridge to trigger emotions. 1-2 drops of lavender oil is used on reusable cotton pads. Dried French lavender and English lavender bunches are also used. All 4 of these give off a different lavender scent.
Sight: The handmade products are made with different textures and colours of fabric, the cotton pads also are all encased in a ring of 3 different colours, allowing for an option of choice and independent decisions. The dried lavender bunches come in 2 varieties; French and English, both of which have distinct colours and bud shapes to look at.
Touch: There is a variety of different coloured, patterned and textured fabric, with something for everyone. The lavender bunches allow you to feel the shape of the flowers and the oil provides a smooth feeling against the skin.
Hearing: The story cards are designed to read aloud, they tell you when to pick up the items in the box. Along the story there are moments you (as the carer) have the option to share your own experiences in relation to the story, the more open you are to sharing, the easier it will be for you vulnerable adult to put themselves in that story too.
All these combine act as one big trigger for the next time you do this activity. Releasing a sense of shared experience, calm and familiarity.
-
Yes, because of the other senses that are triggered by these activity boxes, users can still join in if you follow the cards.
-
It may seem surprising at first, but many people who are bedbound or non-verbal can still experience and respond to sensory activities in meaningful ways.
When one form of communication or ability changes, other senses can become incredibly important. A familiar scent, the feel of different textures, the rhythm of a story being read aloud, or the comfort of gentle touch can all create moments of connection, recognition and reassurance.
Rather than focusing on what someone can no longer do, try to notice what they can communicate. A slight smile, widened eyes, a relaxed expression, a change in breathing, or a subtle movement when a particular fabric or object is placed in their hand are all meaningful responses.
These small moments are a form of communication. By recognising and responding to them, you create opportunities for connection, comfort and shared experiences that can be just as valuable as words.
-
This box was made to last, so never. The only thing that will need replacing is the 10ml bottle of lavender oil, which can be purchased at a local health store.
